USCG REG'S For V2FM
Q: Is the v2fm United States Coast Guard Approved?
A: THE USCG does not require a paddlecraft to have a light that is visible from 2 nautical miles. From a practical standpoint, a paddler is not in danger from 2 miles away, but needs to be visible at a distance in which there could be impending danger. Our GloCone disperses light in such a way that it creates a large "footprint" in the night, and that's what makes is so effective and what it the choice of most kayak anglers. Lab tests for 2 nautical miles intensity focus on a different kind of luminosity that, in our experience, is less important than the large footprint. We have not pursued a 2nm certification in large part because we believe we may have to compromise the very aspects of our light that make it so effective in order to meet those lab specs, which were not really designed for a paddlecraft or kayak fishing conditions. A paddler who wants to be legal simply needs a handheld torch (light) in addition to the VisiCarbon Pro, which is advisable anyway for things like tying leaders and unhooking fish at dark.
